first_imgMinister for State Mr. Kevin Humphreys is to meet with seasonal workers in Donegal following concerns raised by Thomas Pringle TD.Deputy Thomas PringleThe concerns were around seasonal workers accessing social welfare supports.In the Dáil, Deputy Pringle expressed the problem seasonal workers in Southwest Donegal encounter in accessing Jobseekers’ Benefit. The problems has arisen when the casual worker does not have enough qualifying contributions and therefore must claim Jobseekers’ Allowance, because it is means- tested, some people risk losing a significant amount of income and can’t meet their outgoings.The second issue involves self-employed part-time farmers working casually in the fishing industry in Donegal not meeting the criteria to claim subsidiary employment.Pringle also pointed out that workers are finding it disruptive having to travel a long distances round- trip to get their employer to stamp their docket every week.“Unnecessary travel can be difficult for seasonal workers as it is an added expense,” says Pringle. And he added “I look forward to meeting with Minister Humphreys and am appreciative of his proactive approach to my concerns around seasonal workers.
