Five things on Romelu Lukaku

first_imgLondon, United Kingdom | AFP |  Five things on Romelu Lukaku after Manchester United agreed a fee with Everton for the transfer of the Belgian striker on Saturday.Lukaku not lost in translationLukaku is fluent in six languages including Portuguese and Spanish. “I think education is very important. It was important for me to have my diplomas at school so I could also go to England,” he said in 2012. “Education is very important in Belgium and, if you didn’t do well at school in the week, you couldn’t play football at the weekend. You can have an injury and then you won’t play at the highest level any more. If you don’t have a diploma, what then?”Drogba his idol but with qualificationsHis idols are Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba — who did make it big at Chelsea unlike Lukaku — and the Belgian international’s father Roger who was capped by the then Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). However, Lukaku junior made it crystal clear in 2012 when Chelsea had sent him on loan to Premier League rivals West Brom that idols did not mean he wished to be compared to them. “Am I fed up being compared with Drogba? Yes,” he said. “In the beginning it was nice to hear that, but every player wants to make his own name. I want to make my own name. Drogba was my big idol and so was my father, who also played in Belgium. I want to be myself. I want the people to say “this is Roman Lukaku, not the new Drogba”.Dad the guiding lightAny in-depth interview with Lukaku reveals that his father Roger has had the most profound influence on his life whether it be in education or his football career. It was tough love but it has paid off big time. “Very strict,” Lukaku told www.goal.com in 2011 regarding his upbringing. “My father told me, ‘You must always have a goal and do everything to reach it’. Ever since I was six or seven, I wanted to be a professional footballer.” The Crying GameAs a teenager Lukaku and his schoolmates at Saint-Guidon Institute in Brussels were subject of a documentary ‘De School Van Lukaku’ (Lukaku’s School). Part of it filmed them on a trip to London and a visit to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge Ground which left Lukaku overwhelmed. “Give me a ball and I will play here for five hours, What a stadium. If one day in my life I will cry, it will be the day I play here. I love Chelsea,” he says. The teacher accompanying the group urged a certain restraint from his pupil. “You can dream on later,” he says. Nevertheless undeterred Lukaku insists he is not fantasising. “This is not dreaming. I will do it. One day I will play here.”Spoils Fergie’s United farewellAlex Ferguson will be content for United they have secured such a talent and the legendary Scottish manager has good reason to recall the last time they crossed paths. It was Fergie’s last match in charge of United away at West Brom and at 3-1 up at half-time United looked set to give him a perfect send-off. However Lukaku being sent on as a second-half substitute changed it all. He scored almost immediately but United then went 5-2 up. However, three goals inside the last 10 minutes forced a remarkable 5-5 draw with Lukaku emerging with a hat-trick.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Steelers lose to Saints, in must game with Bengals

first_imgAfter just a 6-3 New Orleans Saints halftime lead it became the Drew Brees show in the second half. Brees was 34 of 44 for 305 yards for the game, but 22 of 24 in the second half with a fourth quarter touchdown pass that lifted the Saints to a much needed victory while dropping the Steelers into a first place tie with the Baltimore Ravens at 5-2.No one on offense had an outstanding game. The line was terrible, Ben Roethlisberger was 17 of 28 for just 195 yards, and Rashard Mendenhall had just 71 yards on 15 carries with the bulk of that coming on a 38-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.“We knew what a big game this was,” said Brees. “There was no better way to get back on track than to beat these guys. I felt like we played as complete a game as we’ve played all year, especially in the second half.”Brees’ first TD went to Marques Colston for 16 yards and the second went for 8 yards to Lance Moore with 2:37 left, breaking open a defensive struggle in which neither team scored a touchdown through three quarters. Leigh Torrence then intercepted Roethlisberger to seal it for the Saints (5-3), who were coming off an embarrassing 30-17 loss at home last week to the scuffling Cleveland Browns.“This is definitely a gut check for us,” Roethlisberger said. “We got knocked down a little bit tonight and now it will be interesting to see how we bounce back.”The Saints came in ranked third in total defense and lived up to it, forcing two turnovers and stopping the Steelers on a goal-line stand in the first half. The Saints struggled to run against a Steelers defense that came in ranked first in the NFL against the run and allowed New Orleans only 30 yards on the ground. Brees was sacked twice and intercepted once, giving him 11 interceptions and matching his total from last season. After falling behind by 10 early in the fourth, the Steelers went 68 yards in only four plays to make it 13-10, capped by Mendenhall’s scoring run. Suddenly, both offenses were rolling in time for an action-packed finish. When Brees hit Robert Meachem for a 50-yard gain into Steelers territory, it appeared the Saints would quickly extend their lead again. Then cornerback Bryant McFadden sacked and stripped Brees, and Pittsburgh’s Lamarr Woodley recovered on the Steelers 27.Pittsburgh quickly moved across midfield, only to lose the ball when tight end Heath Miller fumbled on a head-on hit by linebacker Marvin Mitchell. Sharper scooped it up, returning the ball 11 yards to the New Orleans 45.With the acquisition of Terrell Owens this season to go with Chad Ochocinco the defending AFC North champs were supposed to be a powerhouse this season. But instead their 22-14 lost to the Dolphins last week dropped them to 2-5, making them one of the worst teams in the NFL. But for some reason they seem to always play their best football against the Steelers, which they will have to do because another defeat will just about eliminate them from any chance of a playoff berth.Dan Carpenter kicked five field goals for the second game in a row—a rare feat—and the Dolphins overcame another goofy play Sunday, beating the Bengals. The Bengals (2-5) failed to get a first down in the third quarter and were shut out in the second half. Their final chance ended with Carson Palmer’s interception with 2:43 to go, sending the defending AFC North champions to their fourth straight loss and a share of last place with the Browns. It’s Cincinnati’s worst start since 2008, when Palmer was sidelined with an elbow injury.“It is amazing,” said Palmer, who was 17 of 38 for 156 yards. “It’s embarrassing. It’s depressing. It’s every negative word you can think of that we didn’t do our job.”Owens and Ochocinco combined for just 8 catches for 99 yards, and Cedrick Benson had just 69 yards on 20 carries. The Bengals simply haven’t played very well on either side of the ball this season. They were expected to be among the elite this season. This is a must win for the Steelers as well, because they face the red hot New England Patriots (6-1) and Oakland Raiders (4-4), winners of four in a row, after the Bengals. They could very easily be 5-5 after this stretch if they lose to Cincinnati. THE GANG’S ALL HERE—Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) is sacked by New Orleans Saints’ Will Smith (91) Alex Brown (96), Pierson Prioleau (31) and Darren Sharper (42) during the first quarter of an NFL football game at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Oct. 31. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky) What was supposed to be a high scoring game ended up being a classic defensive struggle until Drew Brees put together a classic display of passing while the Steelers offense continued to struggle in the New Orleans Saints 20-10 victory over the Steelers. The Steelers are hoping that this is not a repeat of last season going into the Cincinnati Bengals game this weekend. The Steelers jumped off to a 6-2 record last season only to lose 5 in a row behind an inconsistent offense.last_img read more

Twice he was third in the Grade III Pimlico Special and ran third in the Grade II Brooklyn at Belmont in 2014.“He’s got speed and I think he can go the distance,” Bejarano said. “He was beaten less than a length in the Brooklyn, and that was at a mile and a half. He should be all right, and he should move forward off his last race.”In 14 career starts, Cat Burglar has won four, with four seconds and three thirds, with earnings of $334,400.The field for the San Antonio, race seven: Cat Burglar, Rafael Bejarano, 4-1; Donworth, Mario Gutierrez, 6-1; Cyrus Alexander, Martin Garcia, 6-1; Hard Aces, Joe Talamo, 10-1; Hoppertunity, Flavien Prat, 3-1; Blingo, Alex Solis, 20-1; Imperative, Mike Smith, 5-2; and El Kabeir, Gary Stevens, 6-1. Who the Prem’s fourth-placed team could play in Champions League qualifying

first_img Any one of four Premier League giants could find themselves in Champions League qualifying The race is on to finish in the Premier League’s top four and earn a shot at the Champions League next season, but fourth doesn’t guarantee a place in the group stages.Instead, the team that clinches fourth place will most likely have to contest a qualifying round play off to reach the Champions League proper. With Chelsea and Tottenham nailed on to finish in the top two, four clubs are battling to clinch the remaining two Champions League spots available via the English domestic league.Liverpool currently sit third in the table, which would be good enough for a Champions League group place, with Manchester City fourth, three points behind the Reds but with a game in hand.Manchester United are a further point behind City, having played the same number of games as their local rivals, while Arsenal have a game in hand on both Manchester clubs, but are six points away from fourth with just five fixtures to play. Here, talkSPORT explains what finishing fourth will mean for the clubs concerned and who they could potentially face.Finishing fourth in the Premier League will mean a place in the ‘League Route’ of the final Play-off Round of the Champions League… with one exception. If Manchester United finish fourth AND win the Europa League, they will qualify for the Champions League group stage directly, courtesy of their victory in Europe.Under these circumstances there will only be four Premier League clubs in the Champions League (ie. fifth won’t be given the Play-off Round place). If United win the Europa League but finish outside the top four of the Premier League, there will be four English clubs in the Champions League group stages automatically, with the fourth-placed team contesting the Play-off Round. What is the ‘League Route Play-Off Round’ and which clubs could contest it?There are 10 teams in this round drawn in five ties – the five winners will go into the Champions League group stage, with the five losers entering the group stage of the Europa League. The 10 teams in this round are as follows:– Clubs that finish fourth in Spain (Sevilla are currently in fourth, but that place could yet be taken by Atletico Madrid or Villarreal), Germany (currently Borussia Dortmund, but could be Hoffenheim) and England– Third in Italy (currently Napoli, but could be Roma) and Portugal (most likely Sporting, but could yet be Porto)– Five teams that have come through from the Third Qualifying Round (via the League Route – this is for clubs that have entered the qualification process courtesy of a domestic league position that is lower than first, ie. they aren’t national champions). These five teams are taken from the 10 teams in the League Route Third Qualifying Round, which are:– The third-placed club in France (most likely Nice, but could yet be PSG or Monaco)– Second in Russia (currently Zenit, but could be CSKA Moscow), Ukraine (Dynamo Kyiv), Belgium (currently Club Brugge, could be Gent), Netherlands (currently Ajax, could be PSV Eindhoven), Turkey (currently Istanbul Basaksehir, could be Fenerbahce or Besiktas), Switzerland (Young Boys), Czech Republic (currently Slavia Prague, could be Viktoria Plzen), Greece (currently PAOK, could be Panathinaikos) and Romania (currently Steaua Bucharest, could be Viitorul Constanta or Dinamo Bucharest). When Premier League clubs enter in the League Route Play-off Round draw, five teams are seeded and five are not (based on UEFA co-efficient score). This can have a dramatic effect on the quality of opponent a club faces. For example, in the 2016/17 Play-off round, Roma were unseeded and drew Porto, who knocked the Italian club out, 4-1 on aggregate. But even being seeded is no guarantee of a favourable draw. Last summer LaLiga side Villarreal were among the seeds, only for the Spanish club to be paired with unseeded Monaco, who have subsequently gone all the way to the last four. Here is a list of all the clubs still in contention to qualify for the League Route Play-off Round, ranked by current UEFA co-efficient score (in order to be seeded, a club will need no more than four clubs in the draw to have a higher points total than they can boast):1. Atletico Madrid (140.828)2. Paris Saint-Germain (126.266)3. Borussia Dortmund (124.899)4. Sevilla (112.771)5. Arsenal (105.021)6. Manchester City (100.021)7. Porto (98.866)8. Manchester United (89.021)9. Napoli (88.499)10. Zenit (87.106)11. Dynamo Kyiv (67.526)12. Ajax (64.092)13. Monaco (62.266)14. Liverpool (56.021)15. Roma (53.566)16. Fenerbahce (51.840)17. PSV Eindhoven (46.172)18. Besiktas (45.840)19. Viktoria Plzen (40.635)20. CSKA Moscow (39.606)21. Club Brugge (39.480)22. Sporting (36.866)23. Gent (35.480)24. PAOK (35.080)25. Young Boys (28.915)26. Nice (16.766)27. Panathinaikos (15.080)28. Istanbul Basaksehir (10.340)29. Slavia Prague (8.135)30. Dinamo Bucharest (6.370)31. Viitorul Constanta (5.870)=32. Hoffenheim (0)=32. Steaua Bucharest (0)What do these rankings mean for the Premier League clubs?Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal would definitely be seeded if they were in the Play-off Round draw, but Liverpool could find themselves unseeded if they are forced to qualify. If, for example, Dortmund, Sevilla, Napoli, Zenit and Ajax make it to the Play-off Round, Liverpool would be unseeded. The answer to that, of course, is to guarantee a group stage place by finishing third. 1last_img read more

He says the Global Positioning System is one of his favorite subjects.Jib says, “I am a land surveyor here in Texas and this is not my personal unit. I use it for work.  I have never looked for a geocache with the unit – only verified coordinates with it.”He says that the device’s accuracy is certified at two to three centimeters on a horizontal surface. Two centimeters is about the width of a nickel.    Jib says he’s found the unit is generally even more accurate.A nickel is about 2 centimeters acrossHe says, “This is a ‘survey grade’ system that would not be necessary or practical for most geocachers.”But in case you’re interested, he has details. A lot of details. Jib says the device is made up of a base unit and a rover unit: “The receiver I was using is a Trimble R8 GNSS with a Ranger TSC2 Bluetooth data collector.  The receiver has an integrated antenna that is capable of tracking 44 satellites.”At this point you may say, ‘Well there aren’t 44 U.S. GPS satellites out there.’   You’d be right.  This GPS device can also track signals from Russian and European Union global positioning satellites.Up close with a $40,000 GPS deviceHe says, $40,000 doesn’t buy you any more of a geocaching joy. “To search for a geocache that was placed by a handheld GPS would not be much fun with a ‘survey grade’ GPS device.  The coordinates would have the standard handheld error of about 3 meters or 10 feet.  So really it would not give the ‘survey grade’ geocachers an advantage over other handheld cachers.  But for those that would place a cache with ‘survey grade’ equipment, the normal geocachers should have better luck depending on the accuracy of their own handheld unit.”And Jib has advice for you to get the most out of your GPS device: “Geocachers may find that they can get a better signal and accuracy range by simply moving their body around.  In North America, the best direction for the GPS system is to have a clear southern horizon.  So, if you are having trouble, move around so that the southern sky is more visible.”Sunshot99 helping ATMA establish coordinates for E – HABIT – Without Bed Bath & Beyond He says his best advice is to know your own GPS device inside and out.  If you want to test its accuracy, you may have some luck in the Houston, Texas area soon.Jib says, “I am in the process of getting permission from the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers to set a benchmark/geocache in a Houston area park. The geocache will be a Mystery cache designed to show any cacher how to get different coordinates for the same point. Hopefully this will show them the standard error for their PND (personal navigation device).”Share with your Friends:Morelast_img read more
