The good life at City Hall

first_imgDear Editor,In spite of all of the repetitive declarations of being broke and bankrupt made by the Georgetown Municipality and claims of shortages of financial and other resources, it is clear that the Council is the place to be if you want to be financially rewarded, or as the boys in Guyana would say a “good place to make an extra dollar.”It is quite mind-boggling that whilst the lower ranked workers have to wait each month for their wages and salaries way past the official pay date, whilst pensioners have to wait for long periods to receive their monthly pension, and whilst recently retired persons are waiting for years for their gratuity, some Councillors and some senior officers constantly get extra perks.Examples of this would be the fact that Councillors get special and considerable emoluments when they sit on special committees such as the parking meters, in spite of being paid travelling and other allowances each month to attend all meetings. Councillors and some senior officers also get special payments for being around at events such as Mashramani Day.And then they have the per diems which are paid for both local (rural) and overseas travel which amounts to millions upon millions each year, with even the drivers that take them to places such as Suriname receiving spending money in US dollars. Special meals and overtime is the order of the day at City Hall, which sometimes amount to some persons getting almost twice their pay, with bodyguards and drivers having to wait outside gyms, restaurants, shopping malls, etc late into the night at the whims and fancies of the ‘Big Ones and their families’.I guess it is ‘the good life at City Hall’.Best regards,Sambu Jacobuslast_img read more

Manchester United on alert after Sneijder snubbed by Galatasaray

first_img1 Wesley Sneijder The agent of Manchester United target Wesley Sneijder says the midfielder will hold talks with Galatasaray after his weekend snub.Cesare Prandelli opted to leave Sneijder out of his starting line-up against Trabzonspor on Saturday, with the 30-year-old only entering the fray late on in the 3-0 defeat. It is not the first time the Dutch international has been snubbed by Prandelli this season and his representative, Guido Albers, has revealed his client is seeking emergency talks over his situation. That news is likely to alert United, who have been heavily linked with a move for the former Inter Milan star in recent seasons.“I do not know why he was sitting on the bench,” Albers told Bugun TV.“We’ll have talks with the board on Wednesday in Brussels. We’re going to speak about Wesley and we’ll discuss this important event.“I really do not know why he did not start in the team. Sneijder wants to stay, but he continues to sit on the bench. Nobody wants to sit on the bench.“This is Prandelli’s decision. Sneijder can’t do anything. Is this going to happen every week? That will be the big question on Wednesday. What are your plans?”last_img read more

49ers are No. 1! (In preparedness for a quarterback emergency)

first_imgThe superlatives are raining down upon the 49ers, and for good reason. They’re perfect through two games (attention 1972 Dolphins, break out the worry beads). They’re averaging 414 yards per game. They have scored 72 points in two games, one less than they scored in all of October last year. They have a little kismet going for them as well (if you discount Joe Staley’s broken leg). They’re about to play the Pittsburgh Steelers without Ben Roethlisberger. Then comes two bye weeks (an official …last_img
