Post-secondary preparation gains popularity

first_imgAn Academic Dual Credit program is becoming a popular option for students in the Peace River Region.The program allows secondary school students to take full advantage of expanding learning opportunities, presented by the Dual Credit program, at Northern Lights College. The program allows high school students the opportunity to earn post-secondary credits at NLC while they are still enrolled in high school.- Advertisement -The program began in 2002 and originally focused on trades and technology programs. As of 2009, the program has significantly expanded and now includes subjects like biology, business management, criminology, English, math, information technology, psychology and early childhood education and care.Through the help of Randy Pauls, the principle of the Northern B.C. Distance Education School, NLC Dual Credit courses are also available online.The popularity of the program has been especially prevalent in school district 60 (Peace River North) and 81 (Fort Nelson). This year, School District 60 has 94 students enrolled in the program.In School District 60, students interested in enrollment must select their courses by September 30, with courses usually running from February until May.Advertisement Those interested will have the cost of the courses covered by the School District, with prices of textbooks and student fees to be paid by the student.Brian Campbell, School District Principal of Careers and International Education, says “It’s an investment in our community. We’re helping students to make a seamless transition from secondary school to the world of university-level Arts and Sciences.”The origin of the Dual Credit Program in northeastern B.C. is linked to Northern Opportunities.
