West Ham United players and staff have come together with actor Ray Winstone to show their support for the British Lung Foundation’s (BLF) week-long campaign to raise awareness of the lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), for World IPF Week (28 September – 05 October 2014).West Ham United Palyers Blowing BubblesThe Premier League football team, which is associated with the song ’I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’, and devoted fan, Winstone, will join BLF supporters and campaigners around the world in tweeting and Facebooking pictures of themselves blowing bubbles (this year’s World IPF Week theme), as a sign of support to all those people whose lives are affected by IPF.People can also text ‘IPF’ to 70500 to donate £5 to help the BLF fight the growing impact of IPF on the UK’s health.IPF, which causes a progressive scarring of the lungs, has been on the rise in the UK for decades, and now kills around 5,000 people a year – on a par with conditions such as leukaemia.1,2 However, there is no known cause or cure. As a result, the disease acts with often-devastating speed: barely half of people diagnosed with IPF are still alive three years later, and just one in five will survive five years.3World IPF Week is an opportunity to help raise awareness for this little-known disease and to campaign for more research and better treatment and support for the patients and their families.Kevin Nolan, club captain at West Ham United, said: “I urge everyone to get behind World IPF Week as we are doing here at West Ham United and support the British Lung Foundation to help fight this devastating disease.”Actor and West Ham United fan, Ray Winstone said: “I’m proud that my club is getting behind the British Lung Foundation this World IPF Week. But this isn’t about club rivalry. This week is about raising awareness of a disease that affects 15,000 people in the UK, but that most people have never heard of. It can affect anyone, has no cure, and can kill with devastating speed.“It’s time things change. I’ll definitely be blowing bubbles and texting to donate in support of World IPF Week this year. I hope all Irons, football fans, and all right-minded people across the UK will do so too.”Dr Penny Woods, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation, said: “IPF is a cruel disease that is in urgent need of more attention from our government, to improve the level of care and services offered to patients.“Having West Ham’s and Ray’s support this year will go far in helping us raise the profile of IPF, and helping this disease get more of the attention and investment that we desperately need.”For further information about IPF, please visit the BLF website.
San Francisco: Computers have become so smart during the past 20 years that people don’t think twice about chatting with digital assistants like Alexa and Siri or seeing their friends automatically tagged in Facebook pictures. But making those quantum leaps from science fiction to reality required hard work from computer scientists like Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun. The trio tapped into their own brainpower to make it possible for machines to learn like humans, a breakthrough now commonly known as “artificial intelligence,” or AI. It comes with a 1 million prize funded by Google, a company where AI has become part of its DNA. The award marks the latest recognition of the instrumental role that artificial intelligence will likely play in redefining the relationship between humanity and technology in the decades ahead. Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boost”Artificial intelligence is now one of the fastest-growing areas in all of science and one of the most talked-about topics in society,” said Cherri Pancake, president of the Association for Computing Machinery, the group behind the Turing Award. Although they have known each other for than 30 years, Bengio, Hinton and LeCun have mostly worked separately on technology known as neural networks. These are the electronic engines that power tasks such as facial and speech recognition, areas where computers have made enormous strides over the past decade. Such neural networks also are a critical component of robotic systems that are automating a wide range of other human activity, including driving. Their belief in the power of neural networks was once mocked by their peers, Hinton said. No more. He now works at Google as a vice president and senior fellow while LeCun is chief AI scientist at Facebook. Bengio remains immersed in academia as a University of Montreal professor in addition to serving as scientific director at the Artificial Intelligence Institute in Quebec. “For a long time, people thought what the three of us were doing was nonsense,” Hinton said in an interview with The Associated Press. “They thought we were very misguided and what we were doing was a very surprising thing for apparently intelligent people to waste their time on. My message to young researchers is, don’t be put off if everyone tells you what are doing is silly.” Now, some people are worried that the results of the researchers’ efforts might spiral out of control. While the AI revolution is raising hopes that computers will make most people’s lives more convenient and enjoyable, it’s also stoking fears that humanity eventually will be living at the mercy of machines. Bengio, Hinton and LeCun share some of those concerns especially the doomsday scenarios that envision AI technology developed into weapons systems that wipe out humanity. But they are far more optimistic about the other prospects of AI empowering computers to deliver more accurate warnings about floods and earthquakes, for instance, or detecting health risks, such as cancer and heart attacks, far earlier than human doctors. “One thing is very clear, the techniques that we developed can be used for an enormous amount of good affecting hundreds of millions of people,” Hinton said.

Judges at the United Nations tribunal conducting the genocide trial of the wartime Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžic today began a five-day site visit to Sarajevo, the subject of a notorious and protracted siege during the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s.The four-judge panel – along with the prosecution and defence – from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is visiting several sites in Sarajevo and surrounding areas after a request made by Mr. Karadžic.Mr. Karadžic is charged with two counts of genocide and a series of other crimes, including murder, extermination, persecution, deportation and the taking of hostages, related to actions taken against Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Croats and other non-Serb civilians in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995. The indictment states that he was responsible for a protracted campaign of shelling and sniping of civilian districts of Sarajevo during the 44-month siege of the city. As a result of the attacks, thousands of people were killed and wounded, including many children and elderly persons. The indictment alleges that the shelling and sniping was directed at civilians as they carried out everyday activities, such as tending vegetable plots, queuing for bread, attending funerals, riding on trams or simply walking with children or friends.Prosecutors say the attacks had no military purpose and were designed to keep Sarajevans in a constant state of terror.Mr. Karadžic was arrested in 2008 after 13 years on the run and taken to The Hague in the Netherlands, where the ICTY is based. His trial, which began in October 2009, is currently on a short suspension and is due to resume at the start of next month.
TORONTO — The Toronto stock market was sharply lower for a second consecutive day Thursday as investors appeared to ignore the positive news from overseas that cheered traders south of the border. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 133.58 points at 14,278.49, adding to a big decline of 212 points in the previous session as the International Monetary Fund cut its growth forecast for both the Canadian and global economies. In New York, it was a different story amid renewed optimism that a deal was in the works between Greece and it creditors and signs that measures by Beijing to stem the rout on China’s stock markets appeared to be working. The Dow Jones industrial average closed well off its highs for the day, but was still up 33.20 points at 17,548.62, after having plunged more than 261 points on Wednesday. The Nasdaq rose 12.64 points to 4,922.40 and the S&P 500 advanced 4.63 points to 2051.31.On commodity markets, the August gold contract fell $4.30 to US$1.159 an ounce, but the August crude contract gained $1.13 to US$52.78 a barrel after losing ground all week. The Canadian dollar also halted its recent skid, rising 0.21 of a U.S. cent to 78.70 cents. In economic news, the IMF said economic growth in Canada this year would likely come in at 1.5 per cent, down from its April forecast of 2.2 per cent, while global growth now is expected to be 3.3 per cent, down from 3.5 per cent. However, Craig Jerusalim, portfolio manager at CIBC Asset Management, noted that even the lower figure is “almost exactly at the 50-year average.”“So things aren’t that dire and we can’t forget how stimulative low commodity prices and low oil prices are for countries like China and India. Clearly there will be some big winners and some big losers but … Canada is likely to dragged along by that beacon of strength that is the U.S.”In China, markets rebounded after authorities in Beijing ordered state companies and executives to buy shares in their own companies, while securities regulators told investors who owned more than five per cent of a company’s stock they were not allowed to sell any of their holdings for six months.Meanwhile, Greece delivered details of its economic reform package to creditor countries in Brussels just hours before a midnight deadline on Thursday that would set off a process leading up to the weekend intended to prevent a financial collapse of the nation. For their part, creditor countries seem more willing to discuss how to ease the country’s debtload, a long-time sticking point in talks which are scheduled to continue into the weekend. Jerusalim said he was optimistic leading up to the deadline.“The risk and the implications for not getting a deal done are so severe that I think that alone ensures that something is worked out … even if that means kicking the can down the road for another six months and giving the parties time to work through some of their issues,” he said.

Sexual discrimination claims by workers have soared to a five-year high in the wake of the Me Too movement, new figures show. There has been an avalanche of complaints of workplace sexual discrimination in the last year according to employment law firm, GQ Littler who report that more than 9,300 claims have been made in the past year, marking a 69 per cent increase. Women are increasingly likely to come forward and report discrimination in the workplace since the birth of the #MeToo movement according to employment lawyers.Moves by companies to tackle sex discrimination, such as banning alcohol at work-related events, or discouraging hugging, are not preventing claims being made, said the law firm.Hannah Mahon of GQ Littler, said: “The increase in sex discrimination claims will raise questions over whether employers are doing enough to stamp out inappropriate behaviour in the workplace.”However Ms Mahon cautioned against companies going too far in an attempt to stave off gendered discrimination. Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Sign up to our free twice-daily Front Page newsletter and new audio briefings. “It’s clear that more needs to be done to eliminate discrimination. However, some rules, such as those that prohibit social interactions between members of the opposite sex, need to be carefully thought through and implemented with care.”There is a balance to be struck between effective anti-discrimination measures and measures that can marginalise women, for example by excluding them from work-related social activities or making it more difficult for them to receive mentoring,” she said. Sam Smethers, chief executive of the Fawcett Society, a charity which campaigns for gender equality said the increase in complaints shows more women feel confident to report instances of discrimination.”We know that sex discrimination is significantly under-reported, so it is encouraging that so many more women feel able to challenge it and bring claims. Increasingly they are calling Time’s Up on harassment and workplace discrimination,” she told The Telegraph.”Now we need a positive duty on employers to prevent discrimination and harassment and to drive a change in workplace culture.”Nicki Norman, Women’s Aid acting chief executive said the Me Too movement has given women the courage to report discrimination. “The #MeToo movement has been a unifying force for many women. It has highlighted the extent and ‘normalisation’ of the many forms of sexism, harassment and abuse women face daily, it has shown women that they are not alone in their experiences and given them increased confidence to speak about sexism, harassment and abuse. This includes speaking out about direct discrimination in the workplace,” Ms Norman said. Olivia Newton John has become the latest star to wade into the #TimesUp debate. Asked about the film’s relevance in the Me Too age, Ms Newton said: “Oh, for goodness’ sake, it’s just a movie. I mean, the car takes off at the end!”“I’m not saying there isn’t pressure on women to look a certain way. In this age of social media, there is a danger that women end up feeling like they need to be perfect all the time. But, as a woman, I can also choose not to buy into that. I don’t read all the rumours or look at the pictures,” she told The Sunday Times.
OPTALERT will demonstrate its Australian-developed and internationally recognised driver drowsiness and fatigue management systems on Stand H1050 during AIMEX, to be held at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush, from September 6-9. According to the company, mining companies across four continents use OPTALERT to monitor, measure and manage driver drowsiness and fatigue, thereby helping to increase productivity, mitigate risk and save lives. Various Australian and US research institutions, including Monash University and Harvard Medical School, have scientifically validated OPTALERT, it says.Awards for its systems have included the US-based 2011 InterSystems Innovator Award, the Australian Mining Prospect Award for Excellence in Mine OH&S (2010) and the Anthill Cool Company 2010 Award for Innovation. The OPTALERT system has two key components. One is an Alertness Monitoring System which involves a driver wearing OPTALERT Glasses with an invisible light emitter and receiver in the frame to measure the driver’s levels of alertness. This measurement is translated into a score with a dashboard indicator showing these in real-time and indicating the risk of a drowsiness-related incident. Second is the Fatigue Risk Profiler that enables managers and control room operators to monitor in detail the alertness levels of an entire driving workforce.“The predictive nature of OPTALERT technology to warn drivers well before they even reach dangerous levels of drowsiness is unique,” OPTALERT CEO, John Prendergast said. “And the early warning it provides gives drivers valuable time to change their driving behaviour well before dangerous levels of drowsiness set in. Used correctly, OPTALERT is an effective behaviour-based safety tool that helps drivers prevent fatigue-related incidents from occurring in the first place.”Headquartered in Melbourne, OPTALERT has invested more than $20 million and 15 years of research in developing its technology.

Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Young smokers in Greece don’t plan on butting out despite the looming smoking ban, which bar and club owners claim will destroy their businesses.Greece will impose a tobacco ban in public places on July 1 in its third attempt in a decade to stamp out the habit in Europe’s worst nation for smoking.Under the terms of a law voted a year ago, thousands of restaurants and bars over 70 square metres will have to build sealed off smoking areas.Establishments under that size must choose whether to accept smokers or go entirely tobacco-free, while those lighting up illegally will face fines up to 500 euros ($860AUD).“Our society is more ready than ever to embrace this,” Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos told a news conference. But many say he is out of touch with reality, as most Greeks on the street admit they have no plans on quitting smoking, forcing many bar and club owners to consider alternatives.“The reality of the situation is very grim for us bar owners,” Dimitrios Farmakis, who owns a bar in central Athens told Neos Kosmos English Edition (NKEE).“If we enforce the law strictly we could lose a lot of customers, which considering the current economic climate, is not the best thing that could happen to us.“If we don’t follow the laws we face the risk of being fined, which again is obviously not in our best interest,” Mr Farmakis added. Another bar owner, Yiannis Pavlidis, believes this law, like many others in Greece, is just showboating by a government that is incapable of enforcing the very laws it passes.“Just like seatbelts for drivers and passengers in cars and helmets for motorcycle riders this is another law that will not be properly enforced and I’m sure it will become a mockery in no time at all,” Mr Pavlidis said. Many smokers, including most younger ones, agree that it will be difficult to enforce the law, which they don’t really plan on following anyway.“This is just another joke, almost everyone that goes to a bar in Greece smokes, how on earth are they going to stop us,” Despoina Pliatsika said. Her boyfriend, Panos Georgakopoulos, is a 26-year-old barman that has been smoking for 10 years that believes its impossible to ask Greeks to stop smoking.“How can I tell someone sitting at the bar not to smoke when I myself will want to light up, I can’t work an eight hour shift without a smoke and I sure don’t have the luxury to take a break for a cigarette as I work alone most nights. Forget it, this law is a joke. The Health Ministry though says this is no laughing matter. They claim approximately 7,000 Greeks are diagnosed with lung cancer every year.In the overwhelming majority of cases the ailment is a direct consequence of smoking, doctors say. Last month Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos noted that 20,000 Greeks die of smoking-related diseases every year, adding that the habit costs the National Health System 2.14 billion euros annually ($AUD 3.6billion).The anti-smoking push is the third this decade, after legislation passed in 2002 and 2003 outlawing smoking in public places was mostly ignored.“In Greece we are used to saying that laws are passed but not enforced,” conceded Avramopoulos.“Smoking is already prohibited in hospitals but the ban is not obeyed.”“We will all be judged here…this is the start of an effort to change the mentality on what is this country’s most crucial public health issue,” he said.A 2007 survey found the number of smokers in Greece had risen 10 per cent in a decade while other developed nations were kicking the habit.

RELATED MEMO: Click here for Moore’s memo to staffersThe volatile economy—and the threat of more volatility to come in 2009—has forced yet another publisher to retrench. After weeks of speculation about layoffs and restructuring at Time Inc., the mega-publisher announced late Tuesday a dramatic restructuring that is said to include significant layoffs. In a memo to staffers Tuesday evening, Time Inc. CEO Ann Moore wrote that Time Inc. will reorganize into three business units: news, style and entertainment, and lifestyle. The company’s magazines will be grouped by market, and personnel resources will be pooled. “The goal is to enable our company to move faster, go to market smarter, save significant costs, and employ our editorial resources more efficiently,” Moore wrote. When contacted by FOLIO:, a Time Inc. spokesperson declined to discuss layoffs or restructuring, other than to say that “staffing of the groups will be announced within a few weeks.” But that number could be as high as 600, according to a report in the New York Times, or about 6 percent of the company’s overall workforce. Last week, there were approximately 30 layoffs at Time Inc.’s Southern Progress group. Time Inc. had already cut roughly 100 jobs from its magazine publishing division this year.Market-Focused GroupsEach unit will be headed by one senior corporate executive, Moore said. They will include four executives to manage ad sales, digital business, financial and editorial efforts. Each will also have its own general manager responsible for budgeting. General managers will report to Time Inc. executive vice president and CFO Howard Averill, the memo said. The news group will include the Time, Fortune/Money, Sports Illustrated, Life.com and GEE businesses. It will be managed by executive vice president John Squires.Real Simple, This Old House, All You, Southern Living, Cooking Light, Sunset, Health, Cottage Living, Coastal Living, Southern Accents, MyRecipes.com and MyHomeIdeas.com will make up the lifestyle group, which will be managed by executive vice president Sylvia Auton.Moore will manage the style and entertainment group, which will include People, InStyle, Entertainment Weekly and Essence. As part of the reorganization, Time Inc. will create an advertising sales and marketing group which will be charged with “setting and executing corporate ad sales strategy along with the ad sales head for each business unit,” Moore wrote. The group will be headed by executive vice president Stephanie George.Pooling TrendTime Inc. joins what is an increasing number of publishers restructuring their operations in order to pool resources and cut costs. In August, b-to-b publisher Source Media said it would concentrate its more than 60 magazines into four business groups, and recasted editorial staffs for each of its individual brands, “pooling” editorial by market. Earlier this month, Nielsen Business Media announced an editorial reorganization at its Adweek Media Group that will combine content development and distribution for Adweek, Brandweek and Mediaweek magazines under one editorial umbrella.F+W Media also announced a reorganization that groups its products according to “communities,” not by channel.NOTE: Check FOLIOmag.com throughout the evening for updates to this story.
Hong Kong’s central bank has a launched a new program to strengthen lenders’ ability to protect their critical technology systems after recent attacks by unidentified groups on a global messaging system used by the financial community. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s latest measure, known as the “Cyber-security Fortification Initiative (CFI),” plans to raise the level of cyber-security at banks in Hong Kong through a three-pronged approach and follows similar steps taken by its counterparts from London to Vietnam. The FBI, authorities in Dhaka and private forensic experts are investigating the February cyber heist in Bangladesh where thieves raided a central bank account kept at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, stealing $81 million. They installed malware inside the bank’s Dhaka headquarters that hid traces of their attack in a bid to delay discovery so they could access the funds, according to police and private security firms. The theft prompted fresh attacks on other central banks within the region, with Vietnam’s Tien Phong Bank saying earlier this week it had interrupted an attempted cyber heist that involved the use of fraudulent SWIFT messages, the same technique at the heart of February’s massive theft from the Bangladesh central bank. The Bank of England joined its counterparts in Singapore and the Philippines, asking banks to increase their checks on security systems in the wake of the attacks. andThe HKMA will issue a formal circular next week to all banks setting out that it is a supervisory requirement for them to implement the CFI, a spokeswoman said.

All this brings us to the big setpiece of the hour. More than a month before Halloween, American Horror Story gave us a genuinely scary Halloween party. While the characters are doing their best to have fun, a constantly growing dread hangs over the scene. We know Venable and Mead set this all up to kill everyone. We see them using snake’s venom to poison the apples, using the party to ensure everyone takes a bite at the same time. Poison apples, strange fire-conjuring powers… this episode gets, um, witchy by the moment. Another interesting bit of foreshadowing: The snake Meade uses to poison the apples is the same one Michael summoned earlier. How would she know about that? In any case, the bucket of poison apples sits there for the entire party, creating a tension and uneasiness that lasts throughout the scene. That only grows when an unexpected guest shows up.Between last week’s appearance of “Murder House’s” Rubber Man and Brock’s bunker crashing, we can’t know for sure who is inside the compound with the survivors. That uncertainty is used to great effect here, when Coco meets a mysterious silent masked figure at the party. At first, we don’t know if it’s the Rubber Man or if Brock put together his own costume somehow. We’re pretty sure it’s not, as Coco assumes, Michael. We don’t have to wait too long for the answer. Coco takes the mysterious man back to her room, where he takes off his mask to reveal a scarred, cancer-ridden Brock. As mad and revenge-driven as this episode showed him to be, it was still a shock when he stabbed Coco in the head. “Find our sisters.” @MsSarahPaulson @RobertsEmma #AHSApocalypse pic.twitter.com/7yjIp8lWqX— AmericanHorrorStory (@AHSFX) September 27, 2018That’s where we get our witches. This “Murder House”/”Coven” made us wait a good three hours for the “Coven’ part to show up, but you can’t deny they had a great entrance. Once everyone’s dead, Madison, Cordelia and Myrtle from the “Coven” season ride into the compound. Yes, they survived the apocalypse, and it seems they’re the once Michael thought he had killed. The bring Coco, Mallory and Dinah’s bodies out, and Cordelia resurrects them. Yes, they were sisters in the coven, which instantly makes the rest of the season so much more interesting. It’s too bad we won’t get to see any more of evil Sarah Paulson, but at least there’s still plenty of her to come. This was exactly the kind of episode American Horror Story needed. Bringing together elements from two of its best past seasons reminded us of everything we liked about the show in the first place. Sure, a lot of that is the result of using characters from past seasons, but it works. After a season like “Cult,” maybe we could use a reminder of how good this show has been in the past. Besides, the cameos and references aren’t the only things working in this season’s favor right now. The show can still pull off its particular poor-taste stile of dark comedy. Perhaps more impressive, it can still give us a good scare too.Learn more about FX’s spooky hit in our Geeksplainer. Read up on all our reviews from last season, AHS: Cult. Now this is what I’ve wanted from American Horror Story since the season began. Not only do we finally see the witches from American Horror Story: Coven this episode, but the whole thing feels like a return to form for the show in general. There’s genuine horror, shout outs to famous movie franchises, and some dark comedy that would make you feel bad for laughing if the show weren’t so gleeful about it. The episode pulls back from that shock ending last week by revealing that Michael Langdon prevented everyone from being executed. He needs to preserve the seeds of the future after all. And he gets right back to determining who those seeds are. The opening cuts between each interview, essentially trying to get at people’s darkest thoughts. He is the antichrist, after all.The show is all too happy to remind you of that fact with what might be the season’s best jump scare so far. After sussing out Mallory’s violent thoughts towards Coco, he says he senses something inside of her. Something he thinks will be useful in creating the kind of world he wants. It seems he may have misjudged exactly what’s inside, though. When she admits to feeling like something is trying to force its way out of her, it suddenly does. Her scream blows him back with a large blast, and for just an instant, we see what must be Michael’s true form. I’ll admit that demonic black-eyed face made me scream. This season of American Horror Story is thankfully not skimping on the horror. It doesn’t stop there either. Despite Michael asking what she is, it seems he knows. Whatever she is, it’s something he thought he had killed all of. Now what could that be, in this crossover season of “Murder House” and Coven?” Hmm… In any case, his satanic ritual involving self-cutting and a snake summoning is definitely horrifying. Stay on target Payback… #AHSApocalypse pic.twitter.com/FGhl5I9e6G— AmericanHorrorStory (@AHSFX) September 27, 2018All the deaths in this episode were a big surprise. I mean, this is American Horror Story. We don’t expect all the main characters to live through to the end. But we also don’t expect all of them to drop dead at once three episodes in. On the other hand, maybe this is why the first two episodes didn’t bother trying to develop these characters or even make us like them. Hell, the two most tolerable survivors were never really given much personality and their forbidden love story was glossed over in a narrated timeline. All that makes sense if the ultimate plan was to off them this early on. It strains credibility that nobody questions that Venable and Mead, who’ve been nothing but terrible to everyone, are suddenly feeling generous with the fresh fruit. But hey, AHS has always been a horror movie pastiche, and you don’t get more horror movie than main characters making the dumbest decisions. Even as they all took a bite I wasn’t quite convinced this was where the episode was going, though. That made the subsequent graphic vomiting mass death scene a real shock. From here on out, the episode was just pure fun. It appears moving the crossover season up a year was exactly what the show needed. After Cult last year, I wasn’t sure I ever wanted to come back to this show. The first two episodes of this season were a little better but still had their low points. This one was pretty much pure fun all the way through. Even the clunky confirmation of Mead’s true nature was helped immensely by the blunt, campy humor Ryan Murphy shows do so well. And the big reveal here, where Mead tries to shoot Michael but follows his order to shoot Venable instead, is a perfectly ridiculous soap opera plot twist. And it was one that left us wondering, at least for a second, what are they going to do with everyone dead? Celebrate while you can. #AHSApocalypse pic.twitter.com/LY12O6GZDW— AmericanHorrorStory (@AHSFX) September 27, 2018 What are you? @praisethelourd #AHSApocalypse pic.twitter.com/215cWcXaZ5— AmericanHorrorStory (@AHSFX) September 27, 2018But hey, we can’t spend all our time at the end of the world. We get our first flashback of the season as Miriam Mead recounts the eventful Halloweens of her past. The first time she went trick-or-treating and got a dreaded apple, the time her first date groped her during Rosemary’s Baby and she stormed out of the theater, and her first contract-kill where the holiday made her blood-covered face seem like really good makeup. She recounts these memories to Venable and we find out what she is: A goddamned robot. Who can… grow, I guess. That part’s not really explained, but she is set on helping Venable make it to the Sanctuary. That means killing all the other residents, who Michael deemed more worthy than her.Already, I’m so grateful this episode spends as much time as it does outside of the bunker. It’s not a lot, but after spending almost two full episodes trapped in the same place, I’ll take even the briefest scene of the outside. And we do get one. Not everyone not in the bunkers died in the blast. Humanity is surviving the apocalyptic wasteland about as well as you think it would. There’s cannibalism and marauding hoards that make the wasteland look like a particularly low budget Mad Max movie. Surprisingly, Coco’s boyfriend Brock is about the closest thing to Max in this wasteland. He’s been searching for the compound and, after offing a couple of cannibalistic attackers, happens upon a second horse-drawn carriage in a hurry. He hitches a ride underneath and is able to sneak inside while Mead and Venable investigate this new arrival’s contents: A box of apples. The key to the surprising discovery is tequila’s ratio of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon, which lies within the “diamond growth region.” The resulting diamond films could have inexpensive commercial applications as electrical insulators, say researchers Javier Morales, Luis Miguel Apátiga, and Víctor Manuel Castaño from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Morales is also with Nuevo León´s Autonomous University).Originally, the scientists were experimenting with creating diamonds from organic solutions such as acetone, ethanol, and methanol. They found that diluting ethanol in water resulted in high quality diamond films. The scientists then noticed that the ideal compound of 40 percent ethanol and 60 percent water was similar to the proportion used in tequila.”To dissipate any doubts, one morning on the way to the lab I bought a pocket-size bottle of cheap white tequila and we did some tests,” Apátiga said. “We were in doubt over whether the great amount of chemicals present in tequila, other than water and ethanol, would contaminate or obstruct the process, it turned out to be not so. The results were amazing, same as with the ethanol and water compound, we obtained almost spherical shaped diamonds of nanometric size. There is no doubt; tequila has the exact proportion of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms necessary to form diamonds.” In their experiments, the scientists grew the diamond films using “pulsed liquid injection chemical vapor deposition techniques.” In a specially made device, they heated the liquid tequila to 280 ºC (536 ºF) to transform it into a gas. In a reaction chamber, they heated the gas to 800 ºC (1470 ºF) to break down its molecular structure, resulting in solid diamond crystals of about 100-400 nm. The crystals fell onto silicon or stainless steel trays, accumulating in a thin, uniform film. The high temperatures removed all of the tequila´s carbon impurities to result in pure diamonds. The final diamond film was hard and heat-resistant – properties that could make the diamond useful as coatings for cutting tools, high-power semiconductors, radiation detectors and optical-electronic devices, the scientists explained. They plan to begin industrial-scale applications around 2011, and hope to interest a tequila producer in widening its market beyond the traditional beverage. For now, the scientists are continuing to test different tequilas´ abilities to produce diamonds. They´re also working on creating doped diamonds, which contain impurities, to serve as semiconductors.More information: “Growth of Diamond Films from Tequila”© 2009 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — Whoever thought that science was a dry subject might change their mind after learning about a new discovery in which tequila is turned into diamonds. A team of Mexican scientists found that the heated vapor from 80-proof (40% alcohol) tequila blanco, when deposited on a silicon or stainless steel substrate, can form diamond films. It can be hard to vacation on a budget, especially in places as breathtaking and cultured as Italy. Luckily, there’s a relatively inexpensive but beautiful Italian castle, perched on a breathtaking cliff top, in Roccascalegna, Italy. This castle, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, during the rivalry between Angevin and Aragonese forces, is available to rent — the whole castle — for around $114.Roccascalegna in Abruzzi, Italy.CNN Reports that the site has a troubled past, ravaged by barbarians and pirates as well as enemy combatants. Eventually, it was abandoned and then refurbished for rent to tourists. The castle represents a very different time, and provides a unique opportunity for an affordable adventure into the past in a beautiful, remote location.Due to its storied history, the castle is also a popular destination for ghost hunters, who stay the night hoping to spot the spirit of Baron Corvo de Corvis.Castello di Roccascalegna. The Castle of Roccascalegna overlooks the small town of Roccascalegna, and is popularly known as the “Castle in the Sky.” According to Borghi Magazine, the town dates back to 1160, possibly being expanded from an earlier settlement. The monks from the Church of San Pancrazio were probably present in the region as early as 829.The fortifications were meant to control the valley of the Rio Secco, and defend the area against attacks from the Byzantine Empire. WebsiteWebsiteWebsite WebsiteWebsiteWebsite WebsiteWebsiteWebsite With the final week of our June / July school holidays here, a lot of people will be travelling on the country’s roads. Here are a few tips to keep you safe on the roads:– Be certain to check your tyre pressure, oil and water, and that all your vehicle’s lights are working.– If you are planning on spending the last week camping and have a trailer attached to your vehicle, be certain that the axle is secure and that your lights are connected to the trailer. You want to be certain that the cars travelling behind you are aware when you apply brakes.– When travelling long distances, stop every two hours if your trip is more than three hours, be it just to stretch your legs, get something to drink or have a light snack.– Keeping hydrated is of great importance, as it keeps your brain awake and your body refreshed.– Make sure that if your baggage is packed in the car, it does not obstruct your view and that you can see in your rear-view mirror.– If you have children in the car with you, be certain all body parts are inside the vehicle and keep family / friends updated as to where you are whenever you have time to stop for that much-needed rest.– It is great if you have more than one licensed driver, as this way, after every two-hourly stop, you can switch and have a rest. – Do not get distracted when on the road and be certain that the children know they should be sitting still. Another distraction could be anything that blinds you, so be certain you do not have anything on your dashboard that could potentially distract you.– If you drive with glasses, definitely wear them and pay attention to road signs, drive with comfortable shoes and always wear your seat belt. Keep in mind that children under the age of 12 should be buckled up in the back seat.Be your destination home or afar, travel safely and remember: keep left, pass right!DID YOU KNOW?Click on the words highlighted in red to read more on this and related topics. If you are reading this on your cellphone and there are telephone numbers provided in the text, you can call these simply by clicking on them.To receive news links via WhatsApp.For the latest news, visit our webpage or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
