Of the funding granted to date by Quebecor Fund to support television and multiplatform production, 26% has gone to programs for children/youth, 24% to documentaries, 40% to variety/performing arts, and 10% to drama. 5 Ohio State womens track and field members qualify for NCAA championships

Five members of the Ohio State women’s track and field team qualified for the NCAA championships last weekend at the NCAA East Regional preliminaries in Bloomington, Ind. After winning the Big Ten indoor and outdoor championships for the first time in program history, the Buckeyes entered preliminaries knowing the veterans would have to perform at their best. “Anytime you’re in a field that strong, nothing is taken for granted,” coach Karen Dennis said. Senior sprinter and hurdler Letecia Wright had a successful weekend, taking first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.97 seconds. Junior Christina Manning also qualified for nationals with a fifth-place finish. “Making it to nationals once again feels like a redeeming meet,” Manning said. “I have a statement to make on the track and I plan on making it early.” Manning and Wright combined with junior Madison McNary and freshman Chesna Sykes to help the 4-by-100-meter relay team reach the NCAA finals. Wright is no stranger to succeeding on a big stage. “It feels really good to make it to outdoor nationals for the fourth year in a row,” she said. “It was a big surprise to me to win East Regionals because there are a lot of great hurdlers, so my goal was to just make it to nationals.” Wright’s strong performance comes as no surprise to Dennis. “I think it sets her up for just being able to be confident and prepared for the National Championships next week,” Dennis said. “She ran exceptionally well. … She recognizes this is her last year, and I think she wants to end the year on a real positive note.” Junior high jumper Ashley Galbraith qualified with a jump of 1.78 meters. Galbraith usually competes in multi-events for the track and field team, but participated only in the high jump at the preliminary meet. Dennis said this helped Galbraith perform at a higher level. “Regionals afforded her an opportunity to compete in the high jump with fresh legs, and she had a real awesome day,” Dennis said. “I’m really glad we were able to get through the region. … We’re going to the National Championships. We have to refocus our energy and our effort, and realize that we’re getting ready to face the top in both regions.” read more

Le 7 septembre 2010 à 10:58 • Emmanuel Perrinlast_img read more

Who helps in an emergency

first_imgFrom the print editionIn case of emergency, it’s good to know that help is on the way. The National Emergency Commission’s (CNE) rapid-response system is prepared to take on any situation, including forest fires, chemical spills, earthquakes, landslides, flash floods and tsunamis. Added to that, the commission works to educate the public in emergency procedures and prevention.Following a magnitude-6.2 earthquake on Jan. 8, 2009, which eradicated the mountain town of Cinchona, north of San José, the commission had immediate radio communication with the area, and within an hour, a helicopter was on its way to the town to analyze needs and begin emergency aid. The CNE coordinated with agencies involved in relief work, including the Red Cross, the Health Ministry, the Public Works and Transport Ministry, police and local hospitals.Earthquakes are in a class of their own, the CNE’s Douglas Salgado said. In other types of emergencies, such as hurricanes and floods, the commission can prepare for action because it receives weather reports and briefs from local emergency commissions. An early-warning system is also in place for weather-related events: green alerts as an advisory, yellow alerts signaling the need for evacuation preparation and red alerts to initiate evacuation protocols. During Hurricane César in 1996, the commission broadcast alerts to the entire country by radio, TV and through local branches. “We knew what areas would be hit the hardest and could respond. The Public Works and Transport Ministry closed the highway to the Southern Zone. Red Cross and health personnel were standing by,” Salgado said. “Shelters were set up in schools, community centers and in churches, and people were evacuated from flood zones.”Headquartered next to the Tobías Bolaños Airport in Pavas, a western district of San José, the CNE is a not a group of experts waiting for emergencies to happen. It is a nucleus with a web that includes engineers, geologists and seismologists at universities, the Red Cross, firefighters, hospitals, the ministries of health, environment, and public works and transport, the National Electricity Institute, the National Oil Refinery, national hospitals, the Civil Aviation Authority and others. The commission also can call in help from other countries, as it did during recent forest fires in which helicopters and other aid came from Colombia, Panama and the United States. The country’s 81 cantons and all the municipalities have their own emergency commissions to keep eyes out for potential disasters, report to the national office and begin organizing help during emergencies. In areas subject to flooding, for example, local commissions keep watch on river levels and rainfall, and are ready to report potential dangers.  In case of a major fire, such as the March forest fires that occurred in Chirripó National Park and Buenos Aires, in the Southern Zone, the Environment Ministry evaluates needs and recruits firefighters and emergency workers, while the CNE helps with logistics and getting helicopters from other countries. Such situations require significant coordination, including securing food, lodging and transportation. Crowd control may not call up visions of emergency aid, but when millions of people take to the roads during the annual pilgrimage to the national shrine of the Virgin of Cartago on Aug. 2, prevention is put into action. The Public Works and Transport Ministry monitors roads, the Red Cross sets up health stations along the route, and police and sanitation crews keep accidents and problems to a minimum.Airplane crashes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, tropical storms and major chemical spills all tap into the commission’s web. Tsunamis, however, are not a serious threat, according to Salgado. “They come from far away, and we would have about 18 hours to evacuate people,” he said. Nor would a magnitude-9.0 earthquake hit Costa Rica, according to seismologists, although the country experiences a lot of smaller ones, some of them potentially deadly. The need for emergency response became evident in the 1960s, when the eruption of Irazú Volcano, east of San José, rained ashes over the country for months, creating health and economic problems. People used facemasks and stayed indoors. The coffee-based economy in the region was devastated and crops were ruined. In response, an office of civil defense was set up in 1964.That office was expanded several times in subsequent years, and in 1986 it was replaced by the newly formed CNE. Changes and improvements are ongoing, and prevention and education are now priorities, CNE officials said. The CNE publishes books and materials on setting up shelters, emergency plans for businesses, preparation for local emergencies and special materials for schools. CNE personnel visit local branches to evaluate problems and find solutions. Preventive measures also include building dikes in flood areas, rebuilding bridges and roads and keeping people from building and living in areas subject to landslides and floods. 26. Sheik Ahmad Gumi, "It’s going to be a big game, but has family roots in Grand Forks His childhood was pinned with a series of relocations which crisscrossed the US and took the family as far as PanamaGiven such a winding road he could have made his first memories almost anywhere in the country So it’s fitting that his earliest recollections should be set at UND even if he didn’t actually realize what he was remembering until he was an adult"It was being in this huge building with lots of people and lots of these big television cameras" he recalled "I really had no idea what that was about until maybe 15 years ago when I was going through the archives up at UND It turns out it was the visit of (President John F Kennedy) here in September of 1963 my dad had taken us all to see him"’Honest PR’Some years after that celebration of the young president Johnson would return to campus as a student to earn his bachelor’s degree in English with additional studies in educationHe left the school for a while after graduation but didn’t stray too far from Grand Forks making his first step into the professional world through journalism as a reporter at the Devils Lake Journal Fairly soon after that Johnson returned to Grand Forks and along with one of his brothers purchased a weekly newspaper there the now-defunct Chronicle The paper was based out of the old Security Building in downtown Grand Forks a building which famously burned in the fire during the Flood of 1997The newspaper folded before it could burn brought down in part by what Johnson described as a wary base of advertisers who felt slighted by the paper’s previous owner Of his brief days as a newspaper mogul Johnson said the Chronicle was "the most expensive education I ever got" He set off once again from Grand Forks to work for North Dakota newspapers in Rugby then Crosby and finally back to Devils Lake where he served as an editor In 1988 the next step was finally back to UND to fill a job opening made notable by its title—that of university spokesmanFormer Herald publisher Mike Jacobs says he knew Johnson before even that having met him sometime after moving to Grand Forks in 1980 When reflecting on the role Johnson would take almost a decade after Jacobs said the spokesman was a "presence all that time"He laughed while describing Johnson in his element"(Johnson) always represented the university in an evenhanded supportive way" Jacobs said "never trying to hide anything and at the same time never volunteering things he didn’t need to"Jacobs cited Johnson’s time as a journalist when elaborating on his approach to public relations"He was kind of the embodiment of what you would want of what a professional journalist looks for in professional university relations" Jacobs saidKeeping cool finding valueMuch like one would find as a newspaper reporter Johnson said the public relations role was one which frequently saw the recurrence of major storylinesThe controversy over the Fighting Sioux nickname simmered even in 1989 he said as did periods of budgetary wrangling with the Legislature Within his first decade as spokesman the UND campus was rocked by the floodFormer UND interim President Ed Schafer was governor of North Dakota at the time of the disaster He remembers meeting and working closely with Johnson during the course of the state’s response to the flood"The thing you realize with Peter is that he’s a real thoughtful and solid communicator" Schafer said "He was able to in this chaos grab some sense of message and go out and communicate that message in a way that was understandable and acceptable by people who needed to hear it"That ability to send the message and not "get rattled" was crucial to dealing with the damage wrought by the flood Schafer saidJohnson remembers the flood as a kind of special moment for the university for the sense of togetherness and shared purpose that it brought to campus Still when he ticks through some of the highlights of the job he focuses on less destructive events such as the opening of the Ralph Engelstad Arena the 125th anniversary of UND’s founding and the rollout of any number of new programs whether in entrepreneurship or Native American studies Johnson said he especially liked working with students and helping to acclimate new leaders to life at the university including the school’s top executivesUND President Mark Kennedy said Johnson’s long experience on campus has built a deep well of insight that helps guide decisions on campus"He’s been the point person for a long time when there’s an incident on campus that may need to be explained" said Kennedy He added that his first year in office—a time which included incidents ranging from racially charged social media events to deep institutional budget cuts—had "multiple instances right off the bat" in which Johnson’s expertise had been called into playThough Johnson will officially separate from UND this summer he’ll stay on campus through the winter in a part-time version of his current responsibilities Kennedy said he has appointed former UND Student Government President Brendan Bayer to a fellowship position which will work in accordance with JohnsonMoving forward Johnson’s two official titles will be consolidated into oneKennedy said replacing the outgoing spokesman will be a challenge as whoever fills Johnson’s shoes will need an understanding both of higher education and also of North Dakota and its nuances As for Johnson himself he credits his successes to his mentor David Vorland former director of university relations along with a host of coworkers and UND leadersHe says the draw of the spokesmanship has in many ways been a continuation of what brought him first into journalism—a sense that the job is "something that’s beneficial to society" by sharing information and providing context for the public"There’s a feeling that there’s value to what I’m doing for other
