Rooney urges Man United flops to show respect

first_imgLondon, United Kingdom | AFP | Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United’s under-achieving stars to show more respect for their troubled club.United are languishing in eighth place in the Premier League and have made a slow start to their Champions League campaign.Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton did little to lift the gloom around Old Trafford, with United manager Jose Mourinho under scrutiny following a spluttering run which has seen key players fail to produce consistent performances.Mourinho has clashed with United stars including Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial. And Rooney, who became United’s record goalscorer before leaving in 2017, believes it is down to the team’s highly-paid stars to play with more pride and passion regardless of their issues with Mourinho. In an interview with Football Focus, published on the BBC Sport website, DC United striker Rooney said: “Obviously they are going through a difficult period at the minute, but Jose Mourinho is very experienced and I think some players have to do a little bit better.“In my experience, I have never seen or heard of a player not wanting to play in the game because they have had a falling out with the manager.“I don’t think as a player you could do that, you’ve got to respect the club and the fans and also respect your team-mates.“I don’t think any player, certainly at Manchester United, will be not playing for Jose, I’m sure they’re all working hard behind the scenes to get results.”Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

LEC Disconnects Hundreds in Matadi, Lakpazee for Power Theft

first_imgAn LEC employee pulls up a wire buried by power crooks in LakpazeeBy Alvin WorziIn a campaign to replace rotten electricity transmission poles and check customers’ lines, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Foday S. Sackor, over the weekend oversaw the disconnection of hundreds of homes in Matadi and Lakpazee for power theft. It can be recalled that an eight year old boy while playing with his friend last Wednesday was electrocuted in the Matadi Community after touching a metal pole that was electrically charged. His mother who rushed to his rescue also perished.Director Sackor has vowed to ensure that the individuals who are illegally supplying power that led to the deaths of two persons in the Matadi area are brought to book and face the full weight of the law.Matadi and Lakpazee are heavily populated residential areas of Sinkor in Monrovia.Director Sackor, promised to work with community residents to ensure that illegal suppliers of power in the area account for the deaths of the boy and his mother. He extended sympathy to the bereaved family and the community for what he termed as an unfortunate situation, but said it was not the LEC’s fault. He attributed the deaths to power theft and illegal connections.“The most important thing is for the community to help us find those who are involved in power theft. If they are caught, they will be arrested and prosecuted. Many people are running these lines underground and this is the rainy season. You cannot play with current. We encourage all of those who want current to visit LEC at the Waterside office and legalize their connections, and we will send people to help you,” he admonished. He assured residents of Matadi of massive connections in the area, while warning them to stop power theft “because it robs the government of huge sums of revenue,” while at the same time robbing many people of their lives. Also speaking, the Manager for Energy Monitoring at the LEC, Mr. Patrick D. Kulagbanda, said that the entity has been finding it hard to curtail power theft despite its efforts.Mr. Kulagbanda said power theft in the various communities is an organized crime that involves residents of the communities (who knowingly pay for illegal connections) and the alleged perpetrators who do the illegal connections). For his part, Peter Nyemah, on behalf of the community residents, called on the management of LEC to move in swiftly if they want to reduce the issue of power theft in the area.He pointed out that there will be an increase in criminal activities if the community is left in darkness, and promised to expose anyone caught in power theft.A truck load of wires used in making illegal connections which were collected by LEC management.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Rodgers hopeful Liverpool’s star striker can feature in Merseyside derby

first_imgLiverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is holding out hope star striker Daniel Sturridge can play some part in the Merseyside derby on Saturday. The England striker’s absence for the last few weeks has been keenly felt by the Reds, with the club suffering back-to-back Premier League defeats to Aston Villa and West Ham, while they needed an injury-time strike to overcome Ludogorets in the Champions League and required penalties to see off Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup.Rodgers is keen to unleash the 25-year-old against Everton, but the Liverpool boss recognised the game might come too soon for the former Chelsea forward.“We’ll be very happy to have him back and we hope that can be this weekend,” said the Northern Irishman.“We’ve got a number of injuries that we’re going to give every chance to. He [Sturridge] is a player who’s out on the field working.“Him and a number of others we’ll just assess nearer the time. But if he doesn’t make it he won’t be far off after that.“He’s someone that responds well to treatment. Obviously it’s gone well but there are still a couple of days to go before the game. The most important thing is he’s near to fitness.“He certainly won’t be match-fit, he hasn’t played for a few weeks, but it’ll be great to have him back because he’s a wonderful player for us.“He’s a great reference for our team at the top of the field, his pace and movement and quality, which we saw the last time he played against Tottenham.” Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge 1last_img read more

Deja vu for Man City as VAR saves Spurs again

first_imgAnd City were denied once more when Gabriel Jesus saw a stoppage-time winner disallowed on review for a handball by Aymeric Laporte.“Deja vu. It was the same,” said Guardiola. (The) last action we score a goal, VAR disallowed it. What should I say? It’s the second time, it’s tough.”Guardiola was angered by the inconsistent use of the technology as City were not awarded a penalty in the first-half when Rodri was hauled to the floor by Erik Lamela.“It was incredible it wasn’t a penalty in the first-half, but VAR said it wasn’t and then at the end they did.”City twice led through Sterling and Sergio Aguero, but just like in last season’s European clash between the sides, the hosts were susceptible on the counter-attack and at set-pieces.Lamela’s long range effort briefly brought Spurs level in the first-half and substitute Lucas Moura equalised with his first touch 11 minutes into the second period as Mauricio Pochettino’s men scored with their only two shots on target.A share of the points sees both sides fall two points behind Liverpool just two games into the new season, but on this evidence another shootout between City and Liverpool for the title looks likely as Tottenham struggled to cope with Guardiola’s men, who had 30 shots on goal.“Better than that I don’t know if we are able to reach it,” added Guardiola. “We would like to win because the guys deserve it, but football sometimes is like this.”Sterling continued his stunning early season form by opening the scoring with a fine header from a delightful cross by Kevin de Bruyne.City had been utterly dominant for the first quarter of the match, but were hit with a sucker punch just three minutes after going in front.Lamela was afforded acres of space inside the City half and took advantage of poor position by Ederson to curl home an equaliser from well outside the box.The goal briefly gave Spurs the belief Pochettino had talked of before the game that they can push City and Liverpool for a three-way title race this season. However, that quickly evaporated as the hosts took control again thanks to another sensational De Bruyne assist as this time Aguero converted the Belgian’s low cross. But Pochettino blamed the uncertainty still surrounding the futures of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen before the transfer window closes across Europe for his side’s inability to match City.“Sometimes people struggle to realise we arrive here with our circumstances, we cannot fight face-to-face with them,” said Pochettino.“We have a lot of circumstances we have to fix in the last few weeks until the transfer window shuts in Europe.”De Bruyne should have had a hat-trick of assists before half-time as Ilkay Gundogan side-footed wide another inviting low cross, while Hugo Lloris saved from Oleksandr Zinchenko and Bernardo Silva to keep Tottenham in the game. And that proved vital as Lucas ran straight on the pitch to flick home Lamela’s corner with his head.Spurs did not manage another effort on goal as City laid seige to their goal in search of a winner.Aguero angered: Pep Guardiola (left) and Sergio Aguero (right) were involved in an argument after Aguero was substituted © AFP / Oli SCARFFJesus replaced Aguero, who was embroiled in an argument with Guardiola after leaving the field.“We have a good relationship. It’s the emotion of the game, he’s an incredible competitor,” insisted Guardiola. The Argentine striker and his manager had reconciled any differences as they hugged each other in celebration when Jesus coolly slotted into the bottom corner in the 94th minute to seemingly win the game. But replays showed the ball broke to the Brazilian via the arm of Laporte and City’s ecstasy turned to agony again.0Shares0000(Visited 22 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Gabriel Jesus’s late strike for Manchester City was ruled out by VAR in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham © AFP / Lindsey ParnabyMANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Aug 17 – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola bemoaned a sense of deja vu as his side saw a late winner against Tottenham ruled out by VAR for the second time in four months as Saturday’s Premier League clash ended 2-2.Spurs won a thrilling Champions League quarter-final tie between the sides on away goals in April when Raheem Sterling had an injury-time strike ruled out by VAR.last_img read more
